The American Tomcat has been a top contender for the title of best-selling car in the world for over two decades.
But with the world’s attention focused on the North Korean crisis, a Tomcat that can get its bearings and move in a straight line in snow or mud might not be quite as sexy as a top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz.
Tomcat CEO Tom Hulsey announced Monday that the car’s engine, which powers the company’s trucks, will be available in four-wheel drive as an option.
Hulys main focus, he said, has been on developing a truck that can handle the extreme weather conditions that are expected to come this year.
Tomcats top competitors include the Ford Ranger, Jeep Wrangler and Chevrolet Colorado, but Hulays company is also looking at a number of other brands, including Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Subaru and Mitsubishi.
The truck, which is slated to begin rolling out next month, is designed to handle snow and mud with relative ease, Hulsays company said.
In an interview with CNNMoney, Tomcat Chief Technology Officer Tom Zell said he believes the new truck will offer the best of both worlds, one that can haul and transport heavy equipment, while at the same time being very fast, comfortable and maneuverable.
“We’re going to go out there with a truck,” he said.
“We’re not going to try to put you into a corner.
It’s going to be a vehicle that you can get behind on and you’re going, ‘OK, let’s get going.'”
The company’s first truck will be called the Tomcat M10, and will be powered by a 1.6-liter EcoBoost turbocharged diesel engine that will make 325 horsepower and 285 lb.-ft. of torque.
The truck will weigh in at 5,200 pounds, and it will use a combination of heavy-duty aluminum construction, and lightweight aluminum and steel construction.
Tomcats diesel truck will likely have a four-cylinder engine.
It is likely to be paired with a turbocharged V6, which could be paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission.
One interesting detail about the truck is that it will be built using the same technology as the Mercedes-AMG C350 and C450, two trucks that were built around the same year.
The M10 will be a bit bigger, and heavier, than those trucks, and Tomcats hopes to have it able to haul a load of up to 2,500 pounds, as well as a payload of up 3,000 pounds.
Hulsey also said that the company has plans to build two more trucks, with the goal of having them all in the same place by 2021.
That would put Tomcats overall truck inventory at 10,000.

The company is working on a design for a smaller version of the truck that is capable of handling smaller loads, as opposed to being the bigger, heavier version of Tomcat, Hurlsays blog said.
Tomcars new truck, Hules blog said, will have a 5-foot-high front and rear bumper, a “tweaked” front grille, a new front grinder and a “slimmed down” rear end.
Another thing that is different with the new M10 truck is the presence of a full-size gas engine in the engine bay.
TomCats CEO said that while the diesel engine is an option, the company will not be making the diesel option available.
As for what kind of fuel it will come with, Tomcathos said it will have either gasoline or diesel options, depending on the configuration of the engine.
The new truck won’t be able to go into service until 2021, but that doesn’t mean that Tomcats truck will never be offered in the U.S. Hurles blog also revealed some of the specs for the new trucks new chassis.
It will have an aluminum roof, and a six wheel-base.
Hulsies blog said that this design will be capable of pulling 50 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, and that it should be able pull 55 to 60 miles per hour.
TomCat will also be using a “steering wheel that is designed specifically for handling snow and ice,” the blog said at the time.
That means that Hul’s truck won, in theory, be able carry a passenger in the snow or ice without a hitch, but also won’t take any chances with the weather.
