Trump announces new Navy SEALs, Air Force, Marine Corps and Army commandos to combat ISIL in Iraq and Syria
President Donald Trump on Thursday named five new special operations forces and three new infantry units to join the U.S. forces in Iraq, Syria and beyond to fight the Islamic State group.
Trump said in a statement that the new forces will be part of a U.N.-led coalition that aims to “degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL” in Iraq.
The President also announced a new special forces battalion and infantry battalion, each led by a new Marine Corps lieutenant general.
Trump also announced that Marine Corps commandos will begin training with the Special Operations Command (SOCOM), the U,S.
military’s elite forces.
The president also said the Marine Corps is also training a new Special Operations Task Force, which will be deployed to Iraq and help train Iraqi troops, as well as a new commando unit, according to the statement.
