(AP) Tomcat, the U.S. military’s newest surveillance drone, has deployed its warplanes to Syria and Iraq in a joint attack against the extremist group.
The Pentagon said in a statement Monday that Tomcat has already conducted about a dozen sorties in Syria and has carried out strikes in Iraq and Syria.
The Pentagon says the strike was carried out to help reduce the threat posed by the Islamic States.
The Tomcat is part of the Pentagon’s $6.4 billion program to modernize and upgrade its air defense assets.
The drones can carry bombs and missiles and have the ability to operate independently of ground forces.
